By Annie Roberts

The Vent Haven Convention was back this year! While some people weren’t quite sure what to expect, it provided a sense of normalcy and community that had been sorely lacking in the previous year during the pandemic. There were 425 attendees and about 70 first-time attendees; it was a good mix and didn’t feel too crowded for people who still had concerns about larger gatherings. It was more intimate, and after Covid, it was nice to interact with people face to face. Some people wore masks, others did not, and that was all well and good. There was definitely a sense of “I’m just so glad to be here.” Jenna Caraway from Delaware says, “I always look forward to it. It’s a treasure.”

You never know what you’re going to see at the convention, and in addition to what the schedule says on paper, there are always surprises. One highlight for conventioneers was the Thursday night “Jimmy Nelson – The Legacy of Laughter Continues.” Jimmy’s lovely wife Betty, son Lee Jay, daughter Elizabeth, daughter Marianne, and son-in-law Glenn were honored guests. Tom Ladshaw, assisted by Lisa Sweasy and Annie Roberts, paid tribute to Jimmy by sharing some tidbits that were unknown to Jimmy’s family, including a beer commercial from early in his career and a prototype Farfel that even Jimmy Nelson had never seen. Jeff Dunham surprised the audience in a very emotional viewing of his clip from the 2011 Jimmy Nelson Convention, where in the clip Jeff is with Danny O’Day on his arena stage singing the Nestlé jingle. To close this time of remembering, each family member came on stage to formally donate all of Jimmy’s figures — Danny O’Day, Farfel, Humphrey Higsby, and Ftatateeta — to Vent Haven Museum. Those figures were on Special Exhibit in the Jimmy Nelson Building on the Saturday tours of Vent Haven Museum where attendees could see them up close. It was a wonderful, bittersweet evening.

Even though the convention felt more personal this year, it still had star power. The Saturday Night Show included the phenomenal line-up of Tony Award winner Jay Johnson as emcee, Taylor Mason, Liz VonSeggen, and Willie Tyler. Jay did a distant voice bit with a hotel key card that was timely and hilarious for everyone who had been dealing with the ‘three-swipes is a charm’ key card issue at the hotel. Taylor Mason was high energy and incorporated live music with his keyboard which makes him unique. Tansy Pocernich Davis says, “I like how Taylor points out the puppets aren’t real throughout the act, breaking that suspension of disbelief for comedic effect.” Liz VonSeggen brought something different to the stage by acting three different characters to define what a ventriloquist is.

Willie Tyler and Lester closed the show. Earlier that day, conventioneers were treated to watching a rough cut of Willie’s documentary Hello, Dummy, which featured clips from his days with Motown and throughout his 50 year career. That deepened everyone’s appreciation for Willie Tyler and Lester’s performance on stage, having gotten a glimpse through the documentary into the depth and breadth of his career. Dan Sachoff said, “Willie is still killing it! His performance was really special. He felt the love from everyone who appreciates what he does.”

Star power also included a lecture by Jeff Dunham entitled “A Day on Tour” where Jeff showed attendees a behind the scenes video of doing arena shows. He also brought out a new character URL (pronounced “earl”) that he built during the pandemic. Jeff went through some of his material with URL and talked about character development. Always good about giving conventioneers the inside scoop, Jeff also shared the prototype for a toy Peanut figure that is a hard-figure. “Jeff is so faithful to come every year. I’m so appreciative. He always finds new things to share with us,” says Dan Sachoff. Jeff has attended every convention except for one when his mom made him go to Europe with his church choir.

Darci Lynne arrived Saturday afternoon and had a lovely conversation interview with Executive Director Mark Wade. Petunia, of course, made a guest appearance. She took questions from the audience as well. The Junior Open Mic included seven girls this year, many of whom credit being inspired by Darci Lynne. Again, you never know what you’ll see, Darci Lynne and her parents surprised Gary Owen, her coach, with a plaque and a scholarship in Gary’s name for a young vent to attend Vent Haven each year.

Vent Haven Convention is a great place to learn no matter where you are on the vent learning spectrum. “Every year you learn something different,” says Justin Hlifka from New Jersey who attended his fourth convention this year. From Tom Crowl, he learned that the puppet is not the enemy. When writing material, make sure it sounds natural and comes out of the personality of the character. Jenna Caraway loved all of the P’s in Jay Johnson’s lecture – Prepare, Practice, Polish. Her big take-away was Jay’s advice to fall in love with rehearsal. Practice makes polish; polish makes money. Ken Groves gave a great tip on how to rehearse with his look around the room suggestion. The vent and the puppet simply talk about what they see in the room; they practice making conversation with each other. It is more natural than memorizing a script and is good practice for when the vent talks with an audience member during a show. Ken also talked about making sure the character is distinct from the vent and as realistic as possible.

In Dan Sachoff’s workshop, “Acting for Vents,” he said vents need to give themselves permission to play. Sometimes performers are too critical of themselves, and they need to leave room for the unexpected. The ventriloquist is a character in the act too, a heightened version of themselves perhaps, but the vent is playing a part also. In Taylor Mason’s workshop, he said to start each day with a smile and get moving. When you get moving, that leads to action. You need to find funny in things that are there every day. “Taylor Mason is always inspiring because he’s upbeat,” says Jenna Caraway.

The days are filled with learning, but the evenings are for relaxing and enjoying the shows. “Mike looks like he’s having fun, so you have fun,” says Jenna Caraway. Justin Hlifka says, “Tom Crowl made me laugh the hardest!” Dan Sachoff commented about Hannah Leskosky’s performance, “She’s so original and completely commits to it. It’s not about having the fanciest puppet. It’s about good material and finding your voice. Often people who do standup want to crush boundaries and be edgy and relevant. You can be edgy and relevant without being blue and not lose a whole bunch of your audience.” Mike Hemmelgarn also says, “Hannah Leskosky was such a unique, brilliant performance.”

One definite highlight for Justin Hlifka was seeing his picture on the wall at Vent Haven Museum. He says, “It makes me feel like I’m a part of vent history.” Conventioneers got to visit the museum in its present configuration on this final visit. Demolition and construction of the new building will begin in September. “It was special to see for the last time,” says Dan Sachoff. In addition to Jimmy Nelson’s figures on display in the Jimmy Nelson Building, the museum featured a Special Exhibit for Advisor Alan Semok who passed away in October 2019 with two figures from the museum’s collection — Walter Ego and Woodrow from the film Dummy — and four other figures on loan — Semok’s own Eugene shipped especially for the exhibit by his widow Mary McGinley; Jeff Dunham’s Archie, which Jeff won at a convention for Most Deserving Young Vent; Dale Brown’s Chip Martin, and Al Getler’s Floyd. A tribute film to Semok was playing on the touchscreen in the W.S. Berger Building. Conventioneers were also able to visit their Adopted Dummies and get a picture together.

If we learned anything this past year, it’s that virtual interactions are no comparison to in person. We are built for community. The convention is so much more than the lectures and the shows. It’s the friendships — new and old. Dan Sachoff shared that he connected with Taylor Mason and the two talked about work Taylor had done with the Farm Bureau. Dan learned a ton just from that conversation. Tansy Pocernich Davis, who performed on the Senior Open Mic this year, said she talked to Liz VonSeggen afterwards and how valuable that conversation was. Tansy’s advice for people who are new is…talk to people and don’t be nervous or shy. For her first couple of years, she was uncomfortable to strike up these conversations and that was the wrong attitude. Those were missed opportunities. It’s these conversations that make the Vent Haven ConVENTion special.

When asked why it is important to attend the Vent Haven Convention, Mike Hemmelgarn says, “It’s hard to attend and not be inspired. The convention pushes you to know what you want to aspire to.”

A big thank you to Jenna Caraway, Tansy Pocernich Davis, Dan Sachoff, Mike Hemmelgarn, and Justin Hlifka for agreeing to be interviewed and sharing their experiences of the convention this year!! It was much appreciated!

Lots of Red Dotters … this was the hallmark of the 2019 convention with a record number of 125 people coming to the Vent Haven ConVENTion for the first time! Max Fulham, performer on the International Show said, “This was my first Convention and having watched videos and looked at pictures of this wonderful event for so many years I had incredibly high hopes. These high hopes were more than met and I had an absolute blast.” It was indeed a ton of fun. Teri Foltz, another red-dotter, came to the convention from the perspective of writing comedy with her background as a script writer and stand-up comic. She said, “This was the friendliest convention I have ever attended. Everyone is there to have fun!” This year saw some international firsts with two women coming from Slovenia and Albania. Mark Trevor Ranum from Wisconsin remarked, “The red dot was wonderful, and you really felt welcomed.”

The Convention does welcome people from all kinds of backgrounds, ages, and experience levels. Not everyone is a ventriloquist, but most are. Many are just starting out of doing vent and puppeting for fun Some attendees are semi-pro and starting to earn money at gigs, and the professionals are there to share their experiences and keep improving their craft as well. All together everyone celebrates the wonderful art of ventriloquism. Stevo Schuling of Germany and emcee of the International Show reiterated this truth, that so many ventriloquists are isolated at home with no ventriloquists nearby but at Vent Haven it’s like, “Join the fun! Join the club!” Everyone who attends is part of the ventriloquism family.

First, obviously, is talking without moving your lips, which is where a lot of new vents start and some live for a while, but there is so much more to it. Second is having a totally different voice for the puppet. The third key point is keeping the puppet animated (more about Barry Gordemer’s Mastering Soft Puppet Manipulation later). Finally, creating the illusion of life is dependent upon the vent and puppet having a believable conversation. It sounds so easy, but each point presents its own challenge. Everyone at the convention was there to dig in and learn how to improve their craft.

Junior Vent University

This year saw 22 kids attend Junior Vent University led by Lynn Trefzger, Al Getler, and Jeff Goltz. The kids were working and having so much fun that they didn’t even stop for a snack! Mark Trevor Ranum commented, “Seeing little kids running around with figures warmed my heart, and for the parents who got their kids there, that is dedication.” Jesse Smith, a junior from Huntersville, NC attending his fourth convention, performed on Junior Open Mic. When asked about performing, he said, “Fun. I like hearing the audience laugh. The feedback from the panel was reasonable and helpful.”

Jeff Dunham’s Live Feed

Something new and different this year was Jeff Dunham did his annual lecture remotely via live broadcast from his home! Due to his upcoming Netflix special, Jeff was unable to get to Northern Kentucky; it was only the second convention he’s missed in 43 years, the last being in 1977, but he still found a way to be a part of the festivities. Jeff shared interesting things that he couldn’t have shared if he had been there in person. The group was treated to demonstrations of his McElroy figures Ollie and the Umpire, with Jeff even taking the back of Ollie’s head off to show the mechanisms. He talked about his comedy writing process a bit and showed the vents his workshop with his latest character, conjoined twins Rich and Happy, one’s on the left, one’s on the right…literally and politically. The tension makes for great comedy. Throughout the session, Jeff answered questions from conventioneers and brought Walter out at the end.

Lexi Basilicato’s Open Mic

Vent Haven provides lots of opportunities for vents to perform, from Open Mics with feedback to stellar evening shows to General Open Mics late into the night. “The shows ran the spectrum which was comforting,” said Mark Trevor Ranum. He commented on someone in Senior Open Mic who lost his place and how that performer was able to ad lib and still get laughs. He said it gave a sense of confidence. Teri Foltz shared, “Open mics were fun to watch, and I loved hearing the gentle but insightful feedback from the three professionals.” Plus, attendees got to see some different types of vent performances like Mark Hellerstein, September Cardiff, and Kellie Haines who primarily perform for children’s audiences.

A highlight for many was the outstanding International Show Friday night. Closing act 19-year-old Max Fulham “was brilliant” said Ranum. He opened with a headless puppet named Ed, later gave him a head, and then switched out eyes, nose, and ears for funny bits with his quick wit. The act was very current, exciting, and fresh. The audience was also surprised by an unexpected appearance of Ronn Lucas at the end, using the microphone and kazoo to wow the audience with his masterful technical ventriloquial skill.

Barry Gordemer lecture

Another strength of the Vent Haven Convention is the learning opportunities that Mark Wade puts together in the schedule. A standout lecture this year was Barry Gordemer’s Mastering Soft Puppet Manipulation. Barb Phoenix commented, “It gave me new insights – especially on using the neck and different head movements to convey emotion.”

Dan Horn’s Professionalism was also touted as one of the best. Dan opened with a rare recording of a little know record called Jimmy Nelson’s Instant Professionalism. The familiar voice of Jimmy and Danny came on except every time the word ventriloquist was used, a dubbed lower voice saying professionalism was inserted. It was a hilarious opening. Dan said the keys to professionalism are in a vent’s appearance, confidence, competence, enthusiasm, poise, reliability, and punctuality.

David Ginn’s Magic with Puppets “was very informative,” according to Hal Crowe. Mr. A’s Strolling Ventriloquism was interesting especially for vents who have never done this type before, showing them some different possibilities. As Barb Phoenix said, “No matter how many times I attend, I never go away without learning something – whether it be about the puppet, doing vent, performing tips, or the business side of things.”

Snuffy from the Johnny Main exhibit

Vent Haven Museum offered conventioneers new things to see with several unique exhibits. Darci Lynne and her family recently donated a back-up Oscar and loaned a back-up Petunia, plus posters, toys, and even the dress Darci Lynne wore on AGT. It makes for a fabulous display that was a favorite in the Josephine Berger Building. The Jimmy Nelson Building housed a special exhibit on Johnny Main featuring four of his dummies that were donated this year by Jimmy Vee and Johnny Main, Jr. Pete Michaels, long time friend of Johnny Main was on-hand to share stories and talk about the exhibit. Also, recently donated was Casey the Duck used by Ken Lucas displayed with the other soft puppets. His act was called Ken and Casey, a man and his duck. The weather this year was very, very hot, but the conventioneers braved the heat to see Mr. Berger’s fabulous collection, adopt and re-adopt their dummies, and spend time among the great vents of the past.

Don Bryan & Noseworthy

Saturday Night delivered a killer closing show to end an amazing week. Don Bryan and Noseworthy opened the show with lots of laughs. Lynn Trefzger raised it higher with Chloe and her human volunteer bit. Her nine-year old volunteer Brogi was cracking up the whole time which kept the audience laughing! Taylor Mason finished strong with pigs Paco and Raul and new MAT puppet Romeo. The convention closed with another first-time event…karaoke in the Hospitality Room. A big thank you to whomever set that up because it was a ton of fun! “The last night, I thoroughly enjoyed the karaoke and I saw such support for each other. No competitive spirit – just a love for the craft of ventriloquism,” shared Teri Foltz. It’s what truly defines the Vent Haven Convention.

No convention is complete without giving some shout outs to the unsung heroes of the event…people working behind the scenes. Jody Wade, Ruby Groves, and Linda Truman do a fantastic job getting people registered and being the first friendly faces the conventioneers see. Marilyn Pakarklis and her Hospitality Committee work the doors, remind people about cell phones, and generally help everyone to feel welcome. Tom Crowl, Ken Groves, Dave Carr and his crew keep the stage running smoothly while Virginia and Wally Petersen and Mark Truman run the sound tech. Mary Ann, Melissa, and Wayne Taylor organize the dealers and are always on call to let someone in to get to their table. Chris and Mark Donahoe run the Hospitality Room which is where so many connections and laughs are made. Lisa Sweasy gets Vent Haven Museum ready and is the keeper of the history of this amazing art. Phillip Jones and David Crone capture it all on film for generations. As you can see, Executive Director Mark Wade assembles a great staff who make it all go smoothly.

The Incredible Hospitality Committee

Some may ask the question, “Why should I attend the Vent Haven Convention?” Max Fulham says, “The Convention provides a genuine safe creative space for people to give it a go which I think is so key and whether they are a hit or whether things don’t go quite to plan, they are a champion just for getting up.” Fridolin Kalt aka Calindo from Switzerland says, “The convention gives new ideas. The best further education. The convention is an inspiration for ventriloquists.”

Vent Haven ConVENTion 2018

By: Anne Roberts

“It is an invaluable learning experience. People are so willing to share, you can’t beat it,” says Darrin “Doodles” Baughman. Indeed, the Vent Haven Convention is the place for any and all ventriloquists to come connect with vents of all kinds and be inspired. The focus of the convention this year was developing funny in vent with the feature lecture by Jeff Dunham called “The Power of Funny” echoing the theme of the week.

Jeff & Bubba lecture

Jeff opened by talking about what a fun year it has been with Darci Lynne doing so much for the art, and “what a great state the art is in right with so much room for everybody,” said Dunham. While there are many uses for the art of ventriloquism, Jeff always focuses on the comedic aspects and what vents can do to make the act funny and more entertaining. There are two different ways a vent performs an act – it’s either situational comedy (like with Peanut) or just jokes (more like Walter). The two ingredients of a good situational comedy are tension and conflict. Ventriloquists, unlike stand-up comedians, have the ability to create a sitcom on stage. When asked for advice for new and upcoming vents, Jeff says get on stage in front of as many audiences as possible in great surroundings and horrible surroundings. “That’s what will cause you to become a great entertainer, to learn it from experience on stage. There is nothing like getting up in front of an audience and dying. The silence will tell you where you’re having a problem.”

So how do you go about being funny? You have to write good material. One place to start is with script books and personalize them for your character. Jeff did a demonstration with Bubba J where they did a joke, then went back and read the original from the joke book to show how it was personalized for Bubba J. He encouraged vents that if you think of something funny, write it down or put it in your phone. You think you’ll remember it, but you won’t. The best way to get better is to watch a recording of yourself. Count how many laughs per minute. Jeff works to get a laugh every ten seconds, which means getting rid of the fat, the extra words that take up time but don’t lead to laughs. Funny scripts are concise. Jeff closed his lecture by following his own advice and showing a clip of himself from early in his career and critiqued the performance.

Darren Carr performs the Mask.

Conventioneers got to see funny in action on the evening shows. Darren Carr closed the Saturday All-Star Show by reinventing a common bit…the mask. Instead he put the mask on the puppet which was hilarious. Sari Aalto from Finland surprised the International Show audience by unveiling her Talking Tummy puppet. Dan Sachoff showed up to the Thursday Night Show as a completely different character, a ventriloquist named Earl Shanklin. What you learn from watching the pros is how to think outside the box and give an idea a different spin or a different focus, putting new life into a bit.

A strength of the convention is the learning through lectures that goes on. There was a focus on figure/puppet care this year with two separate sessions – one for traditional hard figures with Austin Phillips and Tyler Ellis, the other focused on soft puppets with Mary Ann and Melissa Taylor. Often vents pour a lot of money into their figures but lack the knowledge to take care of them. The puppets end up beat up and mangy. John McClennan commented that Jim Barber’s The Business of Vent provided good advice on how to grow your business and what pitfalls to watch out for, pitfalls he didn’t even know were there. Jake LaMarca and Jeff Goltz were new to the workshops sharing their recently acquired experiences with comedy clubs. Al Getler’s lecture on making the media work for you encouraged vents to create their own content through press releases and good pictures. Vents should send these out digitally. More people than ever are reading online content. This PR is free and will likely result in a couple more booked shows.

In today’s world of social media, a new aspect of the convention is meeting people in person that vents have gotten to know online. That face to face connection strengthens that bond of friendship. There were 100 first-timers at this year’s convention and 505 attendees total. The new venue felt very homey as it resembled the old Marriott prior to the renovation, fountain and all. Something different at the Airport Holiday Inn was a meal plan that was offered. Darrin Baughman said it was quick and easy with several options at each meal.

Lisa Sweasy and Annie Roberts provided an update about Vent Haven Museum through some fun and games called “So You Think You Know Vent Haven” during their lecture. Mark Wade and Jim Barber were team captains and each team had to guess a unique feature about a puppet at the museum. They also announced that the Capital Campaign has made good headway raising over $300,000 in the first year! Jeff Dunham made a surprise appearance during the lecture with Achmed and then again remotely from the museum at the end.

The tours of Vent Haven Museum on Saturday could not have been lovelier! The weather was perfect for moving from building to building to see the hundreds of dummies in W.S. Berger’s fabulous collection or sit and relax on the patio with friends. Jimmy Vee helped vents adopt a dummy or renew their adoption from last year. The crowd got see two special exhibits dedicated to Bob Isaascon and Jerry Layne, museum advisors and fixtures at the convention who passed away this year. Both gentlemen will be missed dearly by the vent community. Jeff Dunham did pictures and autographs on the front porch. It was very lively and festive.

The 2018 Convention was a great success! Mark your calendars for next year…July 17-20, 2019!
